Nature’s First Green is Gold

Bloged in Uncategorized by Nathan Monday November 17, 2008

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

If

you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run…

Well, here it is, the obligatory Ironman taper post. Not much to say, taper is going just fine. Just about everything I did for the first 10 days of taper felt horrible, now I’m just about rested and things are starting to come around. So, overall, on track.
What with the short days and cold temps, there’s been far too much of this:

I’ll be heading for Tempe on Thursday, gametime 0700 Sunday 11/23.
You should be able to track me by going here, I will be number 271.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

The drought is over

Bloged in Uncategorized by Nathan Friday October 31, 2008

Been a long blogging drought, due in part to Ironman training and work pretty much consuming all available time. But, also due in part to being without a camera. The last part has been fixed. Got a Canon Rebel Xsi kit via Costco. And see, it works:

And the results are in!

Vanessa finished IM Wisconsin yesterday in 10:43:22. 1st of 90 in the 25-29 age group, and therefore assured a slot for Ironman World Championships in Kona Hawaii for 2009. 14th overall women, including pro, and 4th overall of the non-pro women. She did a 1:09:54 swim, 5:46:59 bike, and a 3:36:57 run.
Sounds like the weather was about as good as you can hope for, despite predictions of low temps and rain earlier in the week. Can’t ask for a much better result than that.
